Jill Scott's mom Joyce Scott gave birth to Jill on April 4, 1972, at Philadelphia Pennsylvania. The family was dominated by her grandmother, as a single child. Scott attended the Philadelphia High School for Girls. After graduating in the year 2000, she enrolled at Temple University. Scott studied secondary school education as well as working two other positions. She wanted to be an high school English teacher. Her dream to become an English teacher at high school ended when she quit school. She started her career as a spoken-word artist who performed her own works in live poetry readings. She ultimately joined to Amir Quest love Thompson of The Roots. You Got Me is the outcome of their collaboration. Her first public appearance was as a performer at the Roots Show. After that, she secured collaborations with artists like Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. In addition, she had the opportunity to learn about the arts of performing during the Canada-wide tour of Broadway's musical Rent. She became the first signed artist on the Hidden Beach Recordings label.
